Overview

A pergola doesn't block the sky the way a solid roof does; it breaks up the sun. A grid of rafters and purlins cuts afternoon glare on a patio, frames an outdoor kitchen or hot tub, and gives climbing plants something to grow on.

We build freestanding pergolas and attached pergolas off the house, in rough-sawn or smooth cedar, with shaped rafter tails and knee braces. Posts sit on concrete footings with standoff bases so the end grain never sits in water.

Common questions

How much shade does a pergola give?

With standard purlin spacing, partial shade that shifts through the day. Tighter purlins or a cover add more.

Can a pergola keep rain off?

A clear polycarbonate top makes it rain-tight while keeping the light.

Do pergolas need a permit?

Many cities require one for pergolas over a certain size or attached to the house. We check and handle it.

Can you add lights or a fan?

Yes. We coordinate with a licensed electrician for the wiring.
